Gentle parenting is just a bad term for what this is bc it really doesn’t represent the strategy behind it. People who say it’s passive don’t actually know what it is and are just going by the name or what they see on social media.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith wrote The Gentle Parenting Book and coined the term gentle parenting. In her book the parenting style is clearly not described as passive or permissive. It emphasizes boundaries and discipline, but it frames these within an authoritative, respectful context.

In college and in med school, I envisioned myself

In college and in med school, I envisioned myself climbing the ladder in academic medicine and hustling to work the long hours.

But during my 3rd year in med school, I had a life crisis. I realized that THAT plan was not compatible with the other things I wanted out of life.

I’m greedy with my family time. I don’t want to only see my kids at bedtime. Tbh I’m delusional enough to want to feel like a stay at home mom while also being a great doctor to my patients. I wanted both.

That delusion? It led me right to where I am now, where I’m able to spend slow mornings and sunny afternoons with my children while also living out my dream as a physician. I actually look forward to going to work! I love seeing my colleagues and my patients. And I get to spend enough time with my family to recharge.

Just letting you know - you can do both. You WILL have to live through a hustle chapter. But then you can do it exactly how you want to. You just have to forge your own path.
