I was on a panel last night for students intereste

I was on a panel last night for students interested in a career in health care. These sort of events always make me nostalgic bc they allow me to put myself in their shoes again. I’ve been there before, and in many ways still am. It reminded me of something I wrote during my 2nd year of med school:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
~ 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 ~⁣⁣
“Yesterday, I sat in a room full of brilliant people. We were meeting to discuss our various research projects. Looking around the room, filled with esteemed physicians and bright researchers, I thought to myself “this is the future of medicine.” We hear this kind of thing all the time… our parents’ generation telling us that we are ‘the future’… That statement has become so cliche that I sort of became numb to it. But in this moment, I really felt it’s meaning. It made me uneasy, really, to think that my 23 year old self is adult enough to be the future of anything. I look at the physicians whom I consider mentors and think, how will I ever get there? Will my brain ever hold THAT much knowledge? But the reality is yes - we will all get to that point, eventually. If we work at it. And one day, there will be students looking up to us, wondering the exact same thing. So if you’re lacking a bit of motivation, remind yourself that the people you look up to now were once in your shoes.⁣”⁣

Wow. What a long way I’ve come. And still, I have so much to learn. So much left to grow through. ⁣

✈️ To think creatively, and that there is so much joy to be found in leaving your comfort zone. Nothing ever goes as planned when you’re traveling. You have to learn to roll with the punches and improvise.⁣
⁣
👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏽 How different people react to stress. I think it’s important to know how people handle things not going according to plan, and traveling with someone will definitely show you this. I’ve had a couple friendships that didn’t survive a trip together. And traveling with Joshua showed me that he is pretty much always calm and can bring a giggle to even the worst scenarios.⁣
⁣
🧍🏽‍♀️ It’s also okay to be alone. Whether going solo on a hike, at a restaurant, or exploring a new city, a ton of personal growth comes from traveling alone and being stuck with your own thoughts. What do you really enjoy doing? Who are you when your friends aren’t around?⁣
⁣
🧳 To find beauty in simplicity. Believe it or not, you actually don’t need that entire suitcase of skincare or shoes. You can get by with very very little - just a carry on! - and still have the time of your life!⁣

In my third month of residency and time is flyyyin

In my third month of residency and time is flyyyingg by! This month I am working on the Geriatrics/Palliative care service which has been a real treat because we have more time with each patient. ⁣
⁣
The funny thing about residency is that even though you’re now working, and no longer a med student, there is still so much to learn.⁣
⁣
Whatever you do, whatever you’re working towards, it’s okay to still be learning, growing. In fact, I 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 we all are. Even when things start to click, become easier, we should be pushing ourselves toward the uncomfortable. Trying new things. Challenging the old habits. If you stay where you are, you’ll never be fully aware of just how capable you are 🤍

Halfway through 2nd year of med school I changed my study habits because I wasn’t happy with how I was performing. I went from being a passive learner to an active participant in my studies. Not only did my grades improve, but I felt differently about studying. It became a process I enjoyed, rather than a million daunting powerpoint slides staring back at me.⁣

💤 Listening to lectures⁣
💤 Clicking through PowerPoints⁣
⁣
Active:⁣
☕️ Practice questions (my personal favorite)⁣
☕️ Teaching (to your friends, pets, or the wall)⁣
☕️ Drawing things out⁣
☕️ Flash cards/spaced repetition (y’all know I loooveeee Anki)⁣
⁣
Take the time to form good study habits early. Quality >>> quantity of hours studied. You need to be actively working with the material to learn it best!

Finally getting around to posting the recipe for these Cinnamon Sugar Donut Holes! ⁣⁣Josh and I had so much fun baking these (many times) over quarantine. They are best served hot!⁣

They are gluten and dairy free, like all of my recipes, because that’s how I choose to eat.⁣⁣⁣
