What they want is a really great doctor

Your class rank ≠ how good of a doctor you will be
Your MCAT score ≠ how good of a doctor you will be
Your USMLE score ≠ how good of a doctor you will be
Your COMLEX score ≠ how good of a doctor you will be

Don’t get me wrong, you HAVE to study and learn all the things FOR YOUR PATIENTS. You have to pass your classes. You have to pass your boards.

But your 85 on that test compared to your friend’s 95.. your 220 on USMLE compared to that gunner’s 250.. means nothing about your worth and the quality of the physician you will be.

What makes a good physician is their dedication to serving people, respect for evidence-based medicine, desire to continue learning, ability to lead a team, etc

And absolutely, I don’t disagree that higher scores open more doors in terms of med school acceptance and residency match. But the politics that go into that process is a whole different soap box 😆

Every day this month is a little different, and most days are all in person! I just so happened to have a virtual morning on the day I decided to film 😆

How to become a physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation physician):

🎓 4 years of undergrad

📝 MCAT

🎓 4 years of medical school

📝📝📝 a series of 3 medical licensing exams (USMLE and/or COMLEX)

🥼 4 years of residency (1 year in general medicine + 3 years in PM&R)

📝🗣️ a series of 2 PM&R specific board exams (written + oral)

If you’re subspecilizing, you can choose to do a fellowship and take subspecialty exams.

And of course, there is always continuing certification throughout your career (it never truly ends).

Two more night float shifts, then on to outpatient PM&R clinics at the VA!

What does outpatient PM&R look like?

Outpatient physiatry clinics see patients with diagnoses such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, musculoskeletal injuries, neuromuscular disorders, and SO much more.

Physiatrists specialize in nonsurgical management of pain, spasticity, bowel and bladder dysfunction.

We are skilled in procedures such as electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), spasticity management (e.g. botulinum toxin injections, phenol injections and intrathecal baclofen pump management), peripheral joint injections, trigger point injections and interventional spinal therapeutics.

Additionally, many physiatrists go on to fellowships after residency to further specialize in sports medicine, pain medicine, brain injury medicine, spinal cord injury, pediatric rehab and even cancer rehab.
