Did you know that over 40 million Americans over the age of 18 experience some degree of hearing loss?
As a physiatrist, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that hearing loss can have on an individual’s quality of life. Watching patients struggle to communicate with loved ones, miss out on important conversations, and experience feelings of isolation is heartbreaking. That’s why I’m passionate about spreading awareness of the importance of prevention, early detection and management of hearing loss. Let’s talk through each of these.

Prevention of Hearing Loss
Protect Your Ears From Loud Noises: One of the primary causes of hearing loss is exposure to loud noises. To protect your ears, avoid prolonged exposure to loud sounds, such as concerts, power tools, and firearms. If you’re in a noisy environment, wear earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones to reduce the impact of the noise.
Practice Safe Listening Habits: Listening to music at high volumes or for extended periods can damage your hearing over time. To reduce the risk of hearing loss, limit your exposure to loud music and sounds. If you’re listening to music through headphones, use the 60/60 rule: listen at no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time.

Early Detection of Hearing Loss
Regular hearing screenings can help detect hearing loss early, allowing for prompt intervention and treatment. If you’re at risk for hearing loss (for example, you work in a noisy environment or have a family history of hearing loss) talk to your doctor about scheduling regular hearing screenings. Early detection is crucial, as it can prevent further damage to your auditory system and help you get the treatment you need to improve your hearing.
Management of Hearing Loss

It’s important to first have an evaluation by your doctor so that you know the cause of your hearing loss. Depending on the severity and cause of hearing loss, your doctor may choose from several management options. Hearing aids are the most common, and are even available over-the-counter! Other options physicians may offer include cochlear implants, medications (e.g. if hearing loss is caused by an infection or inflammation), and surgery (e.g. to remove growths or tumors).
As a physician, I’m always on the lookout for hearing aids that can make a real difference in my patients’ lives. That’s why I’m excited to talk about Eargo and their new Eargo 7! Unlike traditional hearing aids, which can be bulky and uncomfortable, Eargo hearing aids are designed to be discreet and comfortable while still providing high-quality sound amplification.
One of the things that I love about Eargo hearing aids is their soft, flexible design. They fit comfortably inside the ear canal, reducing the discomfort that many people experience with traditional hearing aids. The natural sound amplification is also a great feature, as it can improve speech recognition and reduce background noise – something that is so important to my patients.
I’ve recommended Eargo hearing aids to many, and they’re a fan favorite! They’re rechargeable, which is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly. Plus, the mobile app makes it easy to adjust the settings and customize your hearing experience.
